6 Ways to Get Organized with Workflowy

This is a guest post by Tomas Merrill of solosmallbusiness.com

Many people have discovered Workflowy but if you are not one of them, you should check it out. It is free to sign up and easy to learn.
In the year or so since I started using it, I have come up with 6 ways to use Workflowy to help me organize my life.

WorkFlowy is an organizational tool that makes life easier. It can help you organize everything from you personal to-do lists, to larger tasks such as team projects, writing research reports and creating journals.

1. Getting Things Done
The biggest reason I use Workflowy is because it works well with the Getting Things Done (GTD) system of organization.
I have created a calendar list, a project list, a next action list, a tickler file list, and a resource list.
Anything I want to remember I put in Workflowy. That way, I don’t have to concentrate on remembering it. The point of GTD is to reduce the amount of stuff on your mind.
Workflowy allows you to brain dump in a simple and intuitive way.
2. Book list / Movie list / Website list
If you love to read, but are busy, you probably have a long book list. There are just too many good books worth checking out in the world.
Workflowy keeps track of all the books I want to read. I even keep multiple sub book lists so I can easily find the books I want.
The layering function of Workflowy allows you to easily create lists within lists. I also have lists for movies and websites.
3. Blog Post Idea List
You can keep track of any ideas for blog posts as well. In fact, you can enter a whole outline for the blog post into Workflowy, then export it into a word document when you are ready to finish writing the post.
The export function is one the most convenient functions about Workflowy.
4. Address Book
You can also keep track of names, numbers, and addresses of people you want to keep in contact with.
In the event your phone runs out of battery, you will still be able to reach anybody you want to contact. That is, if you have access to an internet connection.
5. To-Do List
There is also the basic to-do list. Anything you need to do, type it into Workflowy.
You can even create multiple to-do lists. One for each project or task you are working on.
Workflowy is accessible on phones, too. So you can access your to-do list anywhere you have an mobile connection.
6. Project Management
Finally, you can use Workflowy for project management.
If you get a paid account, you can use the built in collaboration software to help keep track of who does what on a project.
Even if you don’t get a paid account, you can still use Workflowy to keep track of who does what.
Then export the list to a word document. You can print out the document, post it on a server, or email it to the other people on your team.
If you haven’t heard of Workflowy and you are a lover of the to-do list, you should stop what you are doing and check out Workflowy.com.

I never heard of this tool before, it looks great. I’ve been struggling to the GTD system for awhile now, hopefully this will help. I also love Evernote!

    • I haven’t tried it either Susan, but it looks interesting. I agree, Evernote is awesome, though I mainly use it for long term storage, rather than remembering frequent tasks
